Here's a natural and healthier way to sweeten your day.
Originally native to Paraguay, Stevia is a small green plant bearing leaves that
can be up to 450 times sweeter than sugar.
Stevia has been widely used for decades as a sweetener in Japan. Stevia creates
an intensely sweet effect on the taste buds without raising blood sugar levels.
It is therefore a GREAT alternative for people with diabetes.
Moreover, it contains virtually no calories, so it can be used by people wanting to
maintain a healthy weight or lose weight.
As a Dietitian, I recommend a limited use of sugar or sweeteners for all people.
However for people who do need a little added sugar here or there, Stevia is a
good option.
For people using artificial sweeteners (such as Splenda®, Equal®, Sugarine®,
etc.) I always recommend replacing it with Stevia as it is a natural alternative.
Stevia is available throughout many Australian supermarkets. There are two
main types available – Hermesetas Stevia Sweet and Natvia. Each brand is
available in powder, sachet or tablet form. It can also be purchased in health food
shops in more pure forms.
